Living in the City of Las Vegas
The City of Las Vegas is one specific municipality, not the whole valley. It was founded in 1905 with a railroad land auction, incorporated in 1911, and is the county seat of Clark County. Most of the Las Vegas Strip is actually outside city limits, in the unincorporated towns of Paradise and Winchester. A "Las Vegas" mailing address doesn't always mean a home is in the city.
Neighborhoods within the city
- Downtown: Fremont Street, the Arts District and Symphony Park, home of The Smith Center for the Performing Arts. Read the Arts District, read from the sidewalk.
- Historic central neighborhoods: areas such as the John S. Park Historic District, with mid-century homes on established lots.
- Northwest: Centennial Hills and Skye Canyon, with newer suburban subdivisions and master-planned living toward the mountains.
- Western Summerlin: the portion of Summerlin inside city limits.
What buyers should check
- City or county: whether the home is in the City of Las Vegas or unincorporated Clark County. That decides who handles zoning, permits and services.
- Older homes: age-related items such as roofs, plumbing and electrical, plus permit history for additions.
- HOAs: newer subdivisions usually have one, and many older central neighborhoods don't.
